Should I buy or build my next computer?

The question that every computer user faces when it is time to replace their current computer is should I build?  There are advantages and disadvantages to both sides.

Buying Advantages

You can get rebates to bring the final price down.

A lot of purchase come as packages and include everything you need, computer, software, monitor, and printer.

No muss, no fuss, no bother, just plug it all in, go through a mini setup and off you go.

Someone to call when it doesn't work.

Extended warranties to cover you if it breaks.

Buying Disadvantages

You don't have a clue what's inside of your computer.

Lots of extra, useless software that you'll never use.

Not a lot, if any room for expansion.

Building Advantages

You know exactly what's in your computer.

The ability to plan for expansion.

Only software you install is loaded.

Building Disadvantages

Can be more expensive, fewer rebates available.

Have to buy all software, including OS (Operating System)

No support other than part vendors.

Should I build?

While building your own computer is a satisfying endeavor, it isn't for everyone.  Building a computer isn't hard it just takes a little bit of knowledge and time.  Here are some questions that you should ask yourself.

Am I comfortable working inside of my computer case?

If I break something expensive and can't return it, will I be world ending upset?

Am I willing to take the time to research the parts I want?

Do I have a source of help if things don't work correctly?

If you can answer yes to those four questions building might be an option.  If you're still a bit unsure you can find a local computer store that will allow you to select the parts you want in your computer and will build it for you.  Now that you know what you want to do you can go to the what to buy or build a computer page.
